What to write in a virtual love letter (with examples)
Three or four short paragraphs is usually perfect. Specific beats long.
The hardest part of a love letter isn't sending it. It's the blank screen. Here's a simple way to get started, and example lines you can borrow and make your own.
Why it feels hard
Most of us don't write like this anymore. We text in fragments and send a heart emoji. So when it's time to write something real, it feels awkward, and the instinct is to reach for big words.
Don't. The letters people keep forever are rarely poetic. They're specific. "I love you" is lovely. "I love that you still text me goodnight even when we're in the same apartment" is the line they'll quote back to you in five years.
A simple structure
If you don't know where to start, use these four parts. You can write each one in a few sentences.
- A memory. Start with a moment. It instantly puts them back there with you.
- What they mean to you. Be specific about what you love, not just that you love them.
- Something you've never said. A thought you've kept to yourself. This is the part that makes it a letter.
- Something ahead. End by looking forward to something together.
Example lines you can borrow
Opening with a memory
- "I keep thinking about the night we got lost trying to find that restaurant and ended up eating gas station snacks in the car."
- "Do you remember the first time you laughed so hard you had to put your coffee down? I think that's when I knew."
- "I found a photo from our first trip today and just sat there smiling at my phone like an idiot."
Saying what they mean to you
- "You make ordinary days feel like something I want to remember."
- "When something good happens, you're the first person I want to tell. When something bad happens, you're the only one I want to tell."
- "You have a way of making me feel like I'm enough, even on days I don't believe it."
Something you've never said
- "I've never told you this, but I still have the note you left on my fridge the first week we dated."
- "Sometimes I watch you when you're concentrating and you don't know I'm looking. I love that version of you."
- "I used to be scared of needing someone this much. I'm not anymore."
Looking ahead
- "I can't wait to see what this next year looks like with you in it."
- "The first thing I'm doing when I see you is not letting go for a long time."
- "I'm keeping a list of places I want to go with you. It's getting long."
Lines for specific situations
Long distance
"I know the distance is hard. Some nights it's really hard. But I'd rather miss you than be close to anyone else. Every call where you fall asleep mid-sentence, I stay on a minute longer, just to hear you breathing."
Anniversary
"A year ago I didn't know how you take your coffee or which side of the bed you sleep on. Now I can't imagine not knowing. Thank you for a year of small things that turned out to be everything."
After an argument
"I'm sorry for what I said. I was frustrated, and I took it out on the person I care about most. You matter more to me than being right. Can we talk tonight?"
Just because
"No reason for this letter. I just realized I don't tell you enough how much I like you. Not just love. Like. You're my favourite person to do nothing with."
Things to avoid
- Copying a whole letter. Borrow lines, sure. But if all of it sounds like a greeting card, they'll feel it.
- Writing a novel. Three or four paragraphs is plenty. Leave them wanting more, not scrolling.
- Making it about you. "I feel," "I need," "I want" is fine in small doses, but most of the letter should be about them.
- Waiting for a special occasion. A random Tuesday letter is often the one that means the most.
Sending it
A virtual love letter opens on their screen like a real envelope, which is a nice touch when you can't hand them paper. SendLove's Love Letter is free: write it, add a photo if you want, and send the link by text or WhatsApp.
Read it out loud once before you send it. If something sounds off when you say it, it'll read off too.
